In the fitness world, January is filled with exercise resolutions. More exercise, less overeating, gym memberships, and new beginnings. By the time Valentine’s Day comes along however, most of us have long forgotten or given up on our resolutions. It’s cold outside, it’s dark in the mornings and evenings, and we convince ourselves that this Spring will be a better time to dust off the running shoes and activate our dormant gym memberships.

As it turns out, February is the perfect time to renew your resolutions by seeking help from a fitness professional. The right trainer will challenge you and help prevent injury, hold you accountable, teach you new things, and help you set and meet your goals. Having support is essential, but finding the right person can be challenging. By following these 5 factors, you’ll be sure to find the right person for you.

 Begin your search by asking yourself which setting would be most comfortable for you. Trainers work in a variety of settings; outdoors, in your home, at private studios, and in large gyms. Consider where you’ll feel most comfortable so you’ll be more likely to stick to your appointments. 

Next, think about what type of personality will best motivate you. Are you looking for a strict, no-nonsense trainer, or do you want someone a bit softer, who will walk you through each step slowly? It’s important to think about whether you’d prefer a male or female, and ask yourself what type of relationship you’re looking for. Keep in mind that a trainer should not be a workout buddy, and the focus of your workout should be you. If you find someone more interested in training themselves than paying attention to you, move on.  

Obviously, price and budget are an important part of your search. Most trainers offer a better overall price if you buy more than one session at a time. Large gyms tend to have strict price structures, while private trainers are more willing to negotiate. In general, trainers will charge more to come to your house, and possibly less if they meet you outdoors. Although the hourly rate might be more, tandem or small group training enables each client to split the cost of the hour with the group, making it easier on your budget.

Now that you’re getting closer to knowing what you want, don’t be afraid to ask friends for referrals. Search online, ask around, and watch trainers at your local gym to get a feel for whom you'd be most comfortable with. Don't be afraid to interview trainers, ask about their qualifications, and inquire about a free consultation. The relationship between trainer and client is important, so take your time finding the right person.

Finally, make sure you find someone who can help you set realistic goals, timelimes and create realistic expectations. Knowing what to expect is key to staying motivated and tracking your success. Results take time, and the right trainer can help guide you down the right path. Be patient, work hard, and find someone who can create a safe yet challenging environment.
