:: Achieving our Own Inner Celebrity

In honor of the Oscars, I’m dedicating today’s column to the mystique of the Celebrity Body. We will tune in today for many reasons; to see whether there will be any awkward fashion disasters, to spot brilliant new trends, and of course we want to see who wins. Many of us will also be checking out the flawless bodies of each celebrity and wondering just how they do it.

It’s no surprise that weight loss ads and articles are everywhere this time of year. Each time I see an ad for the Oscars, it seems that there’s yet another ad for a cleanse, new diet book, or workout promising us that we can look more like a celebrity if we buy their product. It’s brilliant marketing, but it sets many people up for disappointment and unrealistic expectations.

Throughout the years, I’ve noticed an increase in clients’ requests to have a particular actress’ legs or a famous actor’s abs. Several years ago, I had a male client who was obsessed with a famous actor’s training regimen for a particular movie. He wanted to follow it in hope of attaining the actor’s upper body, and every session was filled with questions about how the actor may have done his workouts. While I tried to point out that the actor worked out several hours a day for six months with a team of trainers, coaches, and a chef, my client didn’t want to listen. He wanted results, and he wanted them very quickly.
